A Message from Barbra Streisand on the Need to Protect Voting Rights

"The new laws requiring US citizens to produce photo IDs at the poll are designed to deprive elderly and minority citizens of the precious right to cast their vote. These regressive laws are themselves the most dangerous voter fraud threatening American democracy." Barbra Streisand

In indiana we have the voter id law. I do support our voter id law at least in this state. The state offers the voter id for free at the bmv, just show the same proof that you had to show when registering to vote...just as easy as regestering to vote.
Seems like the the liberals have a view that minorities and elderly people cannot do things as well as the rest...well i say they are just as capable and I treat them equally, too bad the liberal cannot treat them equally.

I was born about a month before Ms Streisand and participated in the voter registration activities after Pres Johnston signed the bill into law. I cannot believe, after some 50 years, we are still trying to level the citizen voter playing field. Maybe it was the time ..but young people like Barbra and myself could clearly see the inequality that permeated our country in the 50's - especially Little Rock. I so admire Barbra's stance on equal rights. I am proud of my generation. I remember going to Barbra's last concert before Jason at Soldiers Field in Chicago and her first concert after the birth ... in Central Park. Thanks for the memories, Barbra.... Thanks for everything.

Do You Agree with Electoral Votes? I think that each individual vote should count.I don't know much about politics, but I do know that much. I would love to hear your take on this. Thanks, Melanie

P.S. I have some Questions about a couple of Political Matters that no one can answer. Would you mind answering them for me? If You Can.

Dear Barbra Streisand,

Thank you for all that you give to America.

Throughout the roller coaster ride that has been this election season, I often revisited the youtube video of your performance at the Clinton inauguration, when you sang "God Bless America" and expressed so eloquently the authentic sentiment behind that ballad. Inspired by that performance, my mantra became, over the past few months, "stand beside her, and guide her."

It was no surprise to find an email in my inbox one morning from you, like a reminder from a friend encouraging support of the President, or even causes dear to our hearts. You have helped America through a trying time and it is comforting to know that you are there, standing beside her, shining with the light from above. There will never be another you. It is something just to realize that we all share this place and time with you. God bless America, and the lady that we love: Barbra Streisand.

"When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true." - Jiminy Cricket

Best wishes!

Dear Barbra,
I could not agree with you more, this is a travesty of civil rights. Did you see how it was approved in PA and that if people try and get valid identification it, most likely, will not be mailed to them in time for the election.

How tragic that this is happening right before our very eyes. They are trying to appeal the decision of the PA court ruling; yet will they be able to do it in time before the election?

This is frightening that this is happening, especially in swing States. I read your articles on this and agree that they are going to steal the election using these tactics.

What is more frightening is Romney and Ryan are a re creation of Bush and Cheney. Romney, has no ideas or thoughts and will just be a puppet for Paul Ryan. Ryan, is an ultra right wing conservative who will try and appeal all the advances made by President Obama.

His budget plan and views are frightening. He is against abortion, even is the case of incest or rape. He wants to take back the open military and get rid of Obama's healthcare plan. His Medicare plan is absurd, which might be what turns people off to him. Also, no taxes for the wealthiest and higher taxes for the middle class. When they ask Romney what his budget plan is, he says, "just similar to Ryan's." The man does not have a clue. How he got this far is frightening.

Like Bush, Romney, in my opinion, just wants to become President to make himself and his cronies wealthier. He reminds me of "Zelig" he just adapts to whatever will get him elected. He has never stated a platform or a budget plan. How could he of been the Gov. of MA , the most liberal state in America and passed a Health Care plan mandating insurance and now be against Obama Care? In MA he was not pro abortion yet he was not far right, as he is now. He is a fraud and I live in fear that if he and Ryan win they will destroy all the gains made by Obama.

I am more frightened of Ryan than Romney, as I believe that it will be just be like Bush, Cheney, where Bush was just a puppet and Cheney was pulling the strings.

Have you noticed since Bush has not been President he has not weighed in politically; he is not even going to the Republican Convention. He has not even been quoted or had an opinion. He created all these problems and if Romney and Ryan get in I see a recreation of Bush and Cheney, yet worse, as Ryan is so far right it is frightening.

I hope that Obama can hold onto the White House?

Thanks for keeping us all informed.

Kind regards,
Jeffrey Freedman

Dear Mrs. Streisand,

My name is Elayna Hatchell and I am 17 year old. I know you may be too busy to read this or to even reply but I really wanted to tell you how much you inspire me. About 2 years ago I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus. I could not get over the fact that I could not move as well as others and I felt out of place. I felt different and alone. I cried a lot but everytime I was down I would listen to you sing or watch one of your films. You made me happier and made me realize that its okay to be different and I am not alone and there are happy times even in the bad times. I honestly can say that I admire you and you are my role model. Your poise, elegance, style, and your voice all are qualities I admire. I am a singer a well so singing to your ongs make me much happier. I always wondered why it had to be me but I finally realized why. I am going to med school to become a Pediatric Rheumatologist so I can help kids with the same disease. I feel I will be able to connect with them on a more personal level that way. And when they get down I will tell them to listen to your music because every ingle word is a message to never lose faith or hope. Thank you so much for helping me and for just being you and doing all that you do. - Elayna Hatchell

As a fellow Erasmusian and a Brooklynite I want to thank You for standing on the line of right and bringing this to our attention. It's a ulgy world sometimes and injustice is always among us , but you are a beacon of light with your voice , your shine and your mind. Keep up the great work and contribution that are strengthening our country and spirit your not just a singer your heart is a testimony that really really good things come out of Brooklyn... Shine On!!!!!! Injustice anywhere is Injustice everywhere!

You state in part that the voter id laws "are designed to deprive elderly and minority citizens of the precious right to cast their vote." Could you please explain exactly how this "design" will deprive citizens of their right to vote? It's a strong accusation to make without any supporting facts.

I ask permission to voice a dissenting opinion here.

Voter fraud is like air: Just because we may not see it doesn't mean it's not there and have to prove it's existence.

Voter fraud has been going on since the start of this country (and everywhere else, too).

The Republicans have committed their fair share of it.

In this election year though, they would love to imply that voter fraud is the province of Liberal Democrats; that we are 'soft' on it, or that we even favor it.

In other words, they want to smear President Obama with the inference of voter fraud like they tried to with the 'birther' issue.

I think it's a valid concern that Mitt Romney might gain another advantage because of this issue.

Can I suggest to you, Ms. Streisand, that the wiser move then is to let our adversaries have their 'photo ID' initiative?

I honestly believe that the Republicans actually want us to oppose us on this so they can use it as an effective weapon against us.

Whether you agree with this or not, Shalom.

Once again, at the risk of making a nudnik of myself, please allow me to a voice of dissent here.

The wise move for Liberals and Progressives, Democrats, is to let the Republicans have their 'photo ID' initiative.

Because otherwise they will infer that Liberals are supported by voter fraud.

Voter fraud is like air: Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there; and you don't need to prove it's existence just because you can't see it.

And the Republicans have committed their fair share of it; but they would love to convince American voters this year that voter fraud is solely the province of Liberals.

This is a trap, Ms. Streisand.

Liberals be careful here!

It's hard to believe voter fraud can happen in a country that is the bastion of civil rights, but it can easily happen in the U.S. unless all of The People have easy & fair access to exercise the right to vote. America's elderly & people of colour seem to be feared by the right, instead of being included, there are many who want the exclusive status quo of discrimination & prejudice.

I love & appreciate your lifelong commitment to equality. You're beautiful, Barbra, for standing proud as a torch bearer for human, civil & equal rights for all. Where would we be as a society without you standing by us people who need people all these years?
