What makes Streisand sing?
What Makes Streisand Sing? By Jeff Pierce
It is a sunny afternoon?
Is that the thing that makes Streisand croon?
Catching golden beams of light as they pass
Angelically, as if an invisible creature riding a draft
That weaves and winds it way around the room
Does the rain joy bring causing Streisand to sing?
The steady hypnotizing rain
Channeling a distant flame
What makes Streisand sing?
Is it of simplicity?
Of train rides, scowls, snides
The rising and ebbing of the tides
From a spring on Coney Island
Is it a silent plea?
Love me!
Love me!
Find me beautiful!
Find me funny
Just fine me, honey
What makes Streisand sing?
Is it a spiritual “Earth to Heaven and back in seven” thing?
Is it a mere, sheer, love of the lyrical?
Is it by choice the sharing of the voice?
The tears that flow like blood or ink, one particular tragic episode, I think
Who knows?
What makes Streisand sing?
Each note she belts is like a captive breaking out
Souls black, souls red, souls of the fallen to the foes
Streisand knows
What it is
The thing that makes Streisand roar
The story that she relates
The feelings she illustrates
All of it escapes
It resonates
Still, what is it that Streisand feels?
What makes Streisand sing?
Is it some message from deep within her lungs?
Is it a question that forms as a note within her throat?
Is it a kiss?
Is it a baptism of fire from her tongue?
What makes Streisand sing?
Does Streisand sing of pride?
Is her song a celebration of being alive?
Is it an ode to passions overload?
Does she sing remembering a lover?
Is it a celebration of hands, eyes, mouths, and skin?
Tell me, what makes Streisand sing?
Perhaps, the memories that light the corner of her mind
A love ageless and evergreen or of another kind
Perhaps, Streisand sings to understand
Out of a need to read the lines on humanity’s hand
Singing for hers
Singing for yours
Singing for ours
Singing for you
God bless the voice
God keep the soul
Streisand now, Streisand of old
Sing
Sing
Sing
Again

»Nice lyrics.
All right.
Yeah, I love it!
Very nice! But I think what made Streisand sing is she wanted to be an actress and she thought singing would get her there (she was right). Your story is much more colorful though. Thanks for sharing it.
Jeff, that is wonderful!
Thanks. I have only written about 4 singers. Aretha Franklin, Andrea Bocelli, Chaka Khan, and the incomparable Barbra Streisand.
hey jeff, your poem is awesome! I guess you could ask everybody the same; what makes them do what they do... but don't you think that - as so often- the question is the answer? and she does it for all the reasons that you so wonderfully summed up?
*I love your poem!! * and what makes you write ?? doesn't matter, don't stop!!! <3
