Best acting performance

Arguably Barbra gave her strongest performance in "The Way We Were" I can never watch this film to often - and cry every single time. One of the best love stories ever put on film!!! A strong, honest, sincere performance - should have won the Oscar.

''The Mirror Has Two Faces'' is my favourite.
So, my answer would be ''The Mirror Has Two Faces''.

Funny Girl / The Way We Were/ Nuts

Nancy I agree with you -- I've picked the same three in my mind too.

But her best comedic performance by far is in What's up Doc? My favourite movie overall.

SPACE CAPTAIN - Oh yes! No matter how many times I view "What's Up Doc?" I have to repeatedly laugh out loud. I remember seeing it the second time, I insisted my beloved Grandmother accompany me....she laughed so much and it made me feel so good seeing the way she enjoyed it. I think it was one of the ONLY two times in her life that she went to the movie theater.

Nancy

Your grandmother only saw 2 movies? Wow. In that case it's great that you were responsible for her seeing something so special and joyful.

Yes, SPACE CAPTAIN, I will always remember that experience with her. The other movie she saw by the way was FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.
Nancy

Funny Gilr and The Way We Were Smiling

all her performances wrere so good ,but funny girl was great as if she were destined to play that part.

I would have to say Funny Girl, because nobody could have done more with that script, which was mediocre at best, than she did. Even though her acting skills may not have been as finely honed as in later films, that one really captured her "spark" and vitality the most.

The other movie that I thought she did her best work in is Nuts, which I also think is her most underrated performance and motion picture. Her dramatic speech at the end of the trial is stunning.

The Prince of Tides.

To me that would be in FUNNY GIRL, UP THE SANDBOX and THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT! Smiling

A Star In Born...she was in fine form vocally, especially Woman In the Moon Evergreen and her performance was strong and incredibly moving.

Nuts

i also love her performance in All Night Long b/c its the biggest departure she ever put onscreen. and of course The Way We Were and Funny Girl had the biggest emotional range, so she could really get down

She definitely deserved an Oscar for TWWW. I'd switch up her Oscar win for that over FG anyday. She and RR we're OUTSTANDING bar none. I can't believe Ellen Burstyn won that year over Mrs. B.

Go ahead, throw my to the lions. I'm ready. Smiling

Actually, Ellen Burstyn won the Oscar in 1974 for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." It was Glenda Jackson who won for "Touch of Class" in 1973, thus beating Barbra for "The Way We Were."
I agree though, it should have went to Barbra.

I also consider TWWW, Funny Girl and Nuts do contain her greatest performances.

Does anyone know of roles in movies that Ms. Streisand had turned down, that other actresses have gone on to secure a best actress nomination or have actually won a Academy award?

Top 5 Performances in descending order:

1. The Way We Were
2. Funny Girl
3. Yentl
4. What's Up, Doc?
5. The Prince of Tides

Phil, I just read somewhere that Barbra has told Jane Fonda that she owes her career to Barbra because she turned down They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, and Julia. Both of those would have been interesting with Barbra, although Fonda was excellent in them.

Yes, Barbra recently said that on a tv interview, I am not sure where I heard it, maybe on Oprah or the British show? I would have loved to see her portray JULIA.

the prince of tides, for sure.
she did an amazing job with Yentl, the Way We Were, Funny Girl, Nuts (!), etc. etc. but maybe it's the prince of tides storyline, i dunno.. just brought the very best in her acting. she's a fantastic actress, wish she'd act more.

1. Yentl
2. Funny Girl
3. Prince Of Tides

I personally think she portrayed Fanny Brice in Funny Girl perfectly, I must say her best acting performance was the oscar-winning Funny Girl.

I think her best performance was actually in Yentl. She was very moving. In some scenes in The prince of tides she was also very good. She potrayed a lovely empathic quality as the therapist although this was marred when she threw the book at Tom . Sllly scene. I also loved the way we were and all night long.

Funny Girl,The Owl and the Pussycat,The Way We Were, and Nuts.I think these were her best performances.

Funny girl & The way we were without any doubt

Gosh, this is such a hard question! I own all her movies and think they are all wonferful performances and their own ways...
I guess I would have to say, Nuts, Funny Girl, and Yentl although I love them all sooo much!! :]

Her Oscar-winning debut in FUNNY GIRL is wonderful and it will always have a very special place in my heart because it was the film that introduced me to Babs; however, NUTS gets my vote for her greatest screen performance of all. I am so in love with that singing voice of hers but she doesn't even get to sing in this one. Never mind, she mesmerizes anyway...a thoroughly dynamic dramatic portrayal. She's my Best Actress pick for 1987.

All the films are incredible...
you´re incredible.

Hands down Katie in The Way We Were!
Second: Claudia in Nuts, great overlooked performance!

Hey, everyone- my first post ever.. and i'm happy it's this one.
my favourite streisand movie- that was a tough question, because I have tried to see the great aspects of them all. i find though that the films where she was director and actress... etc. and where she was more active in the making the best. yentl has left a lasting impression- somehow that topic never gets old and with the prince of tides I could identify in a very new way (I had problems with crying too...) and as a third esssential I would say nuts deserves that... feeling helpless- that surely is something everybody can relate to. and in all those films- what made them so special- i think is that she brings out dramatic aspects so well
funny girl sure was a great movie- but I don't think it taught me as much as those dramas of her. the fact I think that she choose to confront the viewers with such challenging emotional problems- that's what made her in these movies and the movies theselves really special- Smiling more than just entertainment Eye-wink

Funny Girl
Hello Dolly
Yentl
The Prince of Tides

The Prince of Tides
Funny Girl
What's Up Doc?
Yentl

She is Flawless in Funny Girl & The Way We Were! Both Beautiful & Heartbreaking & You Just Gotta Love Hello, Dolly! =D

Nuts should have been the 2nd Best Actress Oscar! Claudia is an beautifully realized character.

Two Words:

"Hello Gorgeous"

Unlike the GOP debate tonite...she did NOT lose me at "hello"
