Funny Girl / When did you first see this film and what impresion did it make on you?

I first saw Funny Girl when i was about 10 yrs old ,when my aunt viola snuck me in to see the movie and have been a fan ever since,I learned to sing listening to streisand records and moved to New york from small town Pa. to follow in barbra 's foot steps.

I was skinny and cross eyed as a kid and still am very slim I was the classic guy who loved musical theatre barbra , liza etc.

I think the heart of funny girl is summed up when twoards the end of the movie
when fanny says to nick
" for the longest time you made me feel beautiful"
and nick says
"you are beautiful"

Many who are not that handsome or a classic beauty have had to deal witht being looked over and rejected and have tried to sometimes compensate with some of our other talents to gain our attention and affirmation , but still long to know what it feels like to be that handsome leading man.

I first saw this film a mere year ago, but it completely changed my life. Personally, this past year hasn't been the best, but Barbra's music and films helped wonderfully. Whenever I was feeling blue, I would just pop in "Funny Girl" and I would smile. I've gotten all of my friends hooked on the film and on Barbra and I just wish that I had seen it sooner! Smiling

Well said Lawrence!

Believe it or not, I became a Barbra fan in the 1970's and for many years I wasn't interested in anything she had done in the 1960's. It wasn't until the late 1980's that I finally saw "Funny Girl", and fell in love with "old-school" Barbra. Now I can't get enough of Barbra's earlier work.

I saw this movie two years ago; because I was so young to know this movie.
And I also know that Barbra won Academy Awards with this movie.
My second favourite Barbra movie after ''The Mirror Has Two Faces.''

I saw this movie about 4 months ago and then I bought it but I'm only 15 so I've got time....

I was very lucky to have seen it before it was released. It was in Milwaukee, WI. at a theatre that no longer exists. Many big wigs were in attendance and we were all given a souveiner program when we walked in along with a survey about the film. We had to fill it in before we could leave the theater. When I saw it again, at the nationwide release, many scenes were shortened or totally cut out.

I saw Funny Girl when I was 14 now I am 16 Laughing out loud . I loved the songs but it took me a while to understnad the movie because i wasn't very good at english at that time (blush) Laughing out loud and i am still learning Laughing out loud :D

Funny Girl changed my life. I remember sitting through it twice at a movie theater in San Francisco when I was about 12 years old, and that as they say, was it! I was completely hooked and am still a hardcore fanatic. Within a month I went out and bought every record I could find that had been released up until that time.

But now that I think back, I really first heard her sing when my parents bought her first album. I was probably about 8 or 9 years old and listened to everything my parents had; mostly show music and progressive jazz. I remember very distinctly listening to that record over and over, thinking that there was something quite unique and special about the performances. I thought she was a complete original, and totally different from the females singers I was used to hearing at home like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaugh, Billie Holliday, Anita O'Day, and Annie Ross.

It sounded like Barbra was singing directly to me.

But when I actually saw her perform in Funny Girl, that really sealed the deal.

Being an old fart, I saw it opening week in 1968 at the Criterion in Manhattan, where it played for over a year! I had been a BJS fan for five years by then, and assumed she would be wonderful, but I wasn't prepared for how wonderful. I recall how electrifying My Man was, and when it was over I noticed that a nun sitting next to me had tears streaming down her face. I thought if Barbra can get a nun to cry with a torch song, she will have no trouble winning over movie audiences everywhere. Well, the rest is history of course. What a great and wonderful part of my life she is, was, and always will be.

I saw the movie about 1.5 years ago for the first time. I'm only 19 and by now I have forgotten how many times I have watched it.

HA! Rotafan! What a great memory of the nun. I wonder if she's still a nun or if she decided it was time to change careers and find a man. She's probably married with children by now. Smiling

Oh, I should post of my first viewing of this film. To make a long story short, I didn't have what you call a "normal growing up experience." I wasn't allowed to enjoy the land of make believe. I didn't see my first film period until I was 19 years old...after my first stint in the military. I finally had enough money and freedom to watch my first film. So, I believe the first time I finally did see Funny Girl or any Barbra film was after my 19th birthday.

I saw it kinda late into my Barbra-worship.
I was a fan of the albums before the movies.
I had seen Funny Lady, and knew it backwards and forwards before I ever saw Funny Girl.

But I do remember thinking how heartwrenching it was, especially since the big finish is like the greatest torch song moment in the history of cinema.
And I remember loving "MISSES ARNSTEIN WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NAME" when he comes back with all the money. I must have played that little clip 10 times.

Mostly I remember thinking how incredible she was, like nothing we'd ever seen before.

Yeah, I believe I was 14 when I first saw "Funny Girl". It was the first movie I'd seen of hers, and I was floored. I never felt like I fit in anywhere, I was a straight-A band geek who loved to dance. I got made fun of a lot in school, because I had short hair and was painfully shy. Barbra seems to have a way with connecting with misfits, so to speak. I was surrounded by people I felt didn't understand me, and here was this beautifully unique woman who was a star, in every sense of the word. I just fell in love with her songs and her movies, always listened to her songs when I felt blue. I'm almost 30 and to this day nothing makes me smile like watching her movies or hearing her sing.

1969, Barclay Threatre in Sydney, 16 years old. Her pale face and rising hands against black for My Man was one punch too many. My first visit to the twilight zone. I remember sitting in George Street afterwards, midnight passed before I could get it together to cross to the railway to catch a train home.

There'd been films and characters I'd loved before.. The Sound of Music was playing its fifth year in initial release lol. Funny Girl was a different animal. Barbra's performance seemed to transcend the film, akin to a living thing seperate from the screen.

I'd been a fan since before the Beatles came. Had mastered theft to get some of her albums. Funny Girl created a life-long rift. There is Barbra Streisand, and then there's everything else.

I want to get ny hair cut short like in the funny girl movie. does anyone know where I canget a good picture of this hair style?

best musical i've ever seen. period.

I first saw Funny Girl at age 10. Changed my life. That is my favorite movie and I watch it at least every week. I have all the songs on my mp3 player and wake up listening to the Funny Girl soundtrack. I once saw a sticker on a man's car it said "Got Streisand". I didn't know her at the time. In the car, my mom told me about her. I love her. I feel really bad saying that is the only Streisand movie I watched. I'm still young though. I am renting Funny Lady very soon. I am a true fan of this fantastic movie.

I saw this movie in February 1969 at a theater in northern New Jersey just outside of New York City. I was 9 and my father took me. I had never heard of or seen Streisand up to that point, but I recall being thrilled by that film. I thought she was very funny and I loved the musical moments. I remember that I was eating Snow Caps and I think of this film everytime I see that candy to this day. Needless to say, I was a Streisand fan from that moment on. A few years later, the back to back punch of "What's Up Doc" and "The Way We Were" (film and song) cemented my love of her as a performer.

I first heard about the movie when I was about 12 (I was a big Judy Garland fan and subsequently learned about Barbra etc.) For some reason, I didn't get around to watching it, though I've been wanting to see it for some time. Can you believe I only just saw it a couple days ago? (I'm 20 now) like, how depressing is that, right? Better late than never, I guess. It was kind of a fluke. I got it as a Christmas present for a friend who really wanted it, only to find out she bought it just a few days ago, so I gratefully kept the copy I bough.

Anyway, I have to say that I was in love as soon as I saw the DVD menu. I have to say that my favorite part of the movie is the beginning, up to People. (Of course, I love the whole entire movie, but that was just my favorite bit.) One particular moment also sticks out - when she walks back into the theater while singing I'm The Greatest Star and the guy (sorry, don't recall his name) starts clapping, that look on her face and that sniffle thing she did, that was so adorable. I saw it twice since then, and the Rollerskating Rag number had me rolling every time. I also really really like her hair in the movie. I don't quite know why, but I just think it's amazing. Also, she is just so incredibly gorgeous, no words.

"when fanny says to nick

"you are beautiful" "

^When that moment happened, I literally almost yelled at the tv, "ABOUT FREAKING TIME!" I just felt so bad that nobody has told Fanny that she's beautiful because in my opinion she was always beautiful (then again, my idea of beauty is not exactly conventional, but whatever.)

I saw this film two years ago and it was the reason I'm a Barbra Streisand fan. (she played Fanny Brice so well) I love to play the piano and want to teach piano the rest of my life but if somone ever puts me in front of the stage agian the only role I would want to play is Fanny Brice. For she changed a good portion of my life and looking at the real Fanny (not the movie version) she is the type of person I would like to be when I'm older.

My mother has been a Streisand fan since she saw On a Clear Day in 1969.So my first memories as a very young child are of me,my sister, and my mom watching Funny Girl, Hello Dolli, On a Clear Day, and The Mirror Has Two Faces and singing all the songs from the films.

I didn't watch Streisand's films that much while I was growing up so I had forgotten all of the songs. But a few years ago Funny Girl came on TCM and as soon as I heard the overture all the memories of Barbra's powerful voice and the image of her glorious face came rushing back to me and I suddenly remembered all of the songs and all the lines Barbra had in the movie.I couldn't believe how much this movie had stuck in my head.I was fifteen at the time and it had been at least ten years since I had seen this film but I was reciting the dialogue and singing the songs as if I had watched it every day of my life.

My first thought as I sat there watching Funny Girl for the first time in years was,"My God,this woman is gorgeous!"I couldn't believe no one thought she was pretty.I would have killed for that amazing skin or those wonderfully blue eyes or that incredible mouth.I had never seen beauty like Barbra Streisand's and it had a tremendous effect on my life and how I saw things.

Barbra's performance in the movie was perfection.I cried when she cried,I laughed when she laughed, and when Nick left her I felt her pain. And I could not believe her voice,I had never witnessed so much power and control. When she sang,I was stunned into silence. She is the greatest singer this world has ever seen. The last song,My Man,was when I lost it.Her emotion during that song was so powerful,I just broke down.No other singer has ever effected me like Barbra.

Funny Girl is my favorite musical of all time and Barbra definitely deserved that oscar.

Hello all,

My name is Chad and I'm 29 years old. I've been an admirer of Miss Streisand's for twenty years now, ever since I saw her in FUNNY GIRL. It was my mother who encouraged me to give the film a try and I'm forever grateful to her that she did. I had never heard of Barbra Streisand before watching this film and what a fabulous way to become acquainted with her work. I knew nothing about the Academy Awards at the time, but I was far from surprised when I later learned that she had won the Best Actress Oscar. I had always assumed that she must have won some type of award for her extraordinary performance. FUNNY GIRL was a marvelous vehicle for Miss Streisand, giving her opportunities as a singer, comedienne, and dramatic actress...and she proved to be expert in all departments. I am completely in awe of this woman, who is also one of our great movie directors. Virtually everything she touches turns to gold as far as I'm concerned.

I first saw the movie December 8th 2009

OMG!!!!!! I loved it so much. It was amazing.

I decided to see it because when i was in sixth grade i was in girls chorus. We sang a song "the way we were" it had no meaning to me then, but i knew the song. About two years ago I was visiting my aunt, she collects movies. I love movies i learn from them. I saw " the way we were". I asked her was it good, she said hell yeah but it will make you cry and its a love story if you like that stuff. So i watched it and yes i cried. I loved it i watched it two more times that night. She had the DVD and the DVD has special features which include trailers of other movies she was in. Anyway a bunch time passed and i had not seen any movies. Then I started renting movies on a regular basis and I ran across "the way we were" and again watched the trailers. I then said hey let me watch these movies. " the prince of tides", "the mirror has two faces" and I think "funny girl". Then i saw filmographies . I checked Barbra's and wrote down all the movies and sought out to see them. I def loved "funny girl". I watched it several times and got the songs on my MP3 player. It was just terrific

I first saw 'Funny Girl' about two weeks ago, i'm 18 and i've become totally obsessed with Barbra's movies and music.

I loved everything about 'Funny Girl', the costumes, songs, the plot - everything was just so fantastic and of course Barbra's acting was amazin. My favourite movie line of all time has to be "Hello, gorgeous" i just love the way she pronounces it Smiling

I had this discussion with my Mum a few days ago about when you've seen a film so many times you sometimes skip to the best scenes, but during 'Funny Girl' i just never want it to end - but when it does i then put 'Funny Lady' on.

- She really is 'the greatest star'

I am Brazilian and Im 44 years old. I saw the movie I was about 11 and I watched with my father , thats a Barbra's big fan as I am. We watched the film together in a saturday night Tv show a lot years ago. We lagh , we cry but fist of all we love Barbra's perform. As we say here in Brazil " Barbra é tudo "( Barbra is all )

The first time I ever saw funny girl I think I was about 9 years old. I am way too young(16) and colombian. My parents are movie fans. I remember it seemed like a really old movie so I wasn't that interested in it but I watched it with my parents on tv cuz I had nothing else to do. it was boring to me til I'm the greatest star then the whole movie was a totally amazing for me. I remember the first time I saw the scene "You are woman I am man" and I totally fell in love with her. I t was great. Then I learned all the songs from the movie, but I wasn't really related to barbra til I turned 15. in the mean time she was the amazingly gifted funny brice.

I saw it a few years ago so I think I was around 12. Far as the impression, it seemed as though she was funny/silly, talked a lot, and definitaly someone I could relate to. That was the beginning of my becoming a fan and now I'm even a more dedicated fan and can relate even more.
