A Report from the Marvin Hamlisch Tribute, last night, in New York City.

BarbraNews.com Exclusive Report.

Last night, when Barbra walked onto the stage and looked up at Marvin's picture - before heading to the microphone - the audience could already sense that they were in for something very special.

After Terre Hamlisch's (Marvin's widow) opening speech, and a number of performances of music from Marvin's career, Barbra was there to bring it all home... back to Manhattan, where she and Marvin started their careers, but more specifically, at The Juilliard School, where Marvin had trained and where a scholarship fund has been set up in his honor. Attendees last night were urged to contribute to the fund.

(For those of you who would like to contribute to the fund, the address is: Juilliard School Development Office. Attention: Riccardo Salmona. 60 Lincoln Center Plaza New York, ny 10023)

Barbra proceeded to talk about her friend Marvin and elicited both laughter and tears. When she unexpectedly put the iconic favorite "The Way We Were" together with the theme from Ice Castles "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love," a song no one had ever heard her sing - with special lyrics - there wasn't a dry eye in the house, whether you were in the audience, or backstage.

As she spoke and sang, the way Barbra felt about Marvin Hamlisch was visibly apparent.

Joe Torre, the former manager of the Yankees, who was in attendance last night, was surely thinking "She knocked it out of the ballpark!"

Ms. Streisand received the only standing ovation of the evening. It was immediate and sincere and lasted quite a while, and one could clearly see she was appreciative and a bit overwhelmed. It was the perfect storm of artist, material, personal remembrance and performance.

We spotted Alan & Marilyn Bergman in the house and they, too, were visibly overwhelmed.

Richard Jay-Alexander, who was there, told me, exclusively, "It was just one of those nights. You had to be there ... because whether it was the stars who were performing, or the fresh young faces from the upcoming musical "The Nutty Professor" ... you could just feel the love and admiration in the room.... and, of course, the loss. Mike Nichols put together a beautiful evening and everyone on both sides of the footlights were happy to be there and remember Marvin Hamlisch, "a singular sensation."

Looking Through the Eyes of Love is one of my favorites. I would love to hear that song sung by Barbra. I really hope that this wish be granted.

I'm certain the performance given by Ms. Streisand was out of love and
appreciation for her dear friend.
He will be missed by all who loved his music.

Marvin Hamlisch was such a major part of our lives. I sincerely hope this tribute will be shared with the world. So many people loved & appreciated him & his work.

... I'm fortunate to have met Marvin via "Billboard Magazine," when he performed at Caesars Palace in Vegas ('79) & later, when he was Pops Director with thee Bflo. Philharmonic Orchestra. ('02) Marvin was always approachable, funny & professional, enjoying his performing. He gave us so much, wonderful music to remember him, especially "A Chorus Line," which Bflo. native Choreographer Michael Bennett created with Marvin!

I imagine this would be an amazing thing to see. I would love to have this televised for everyone to see. It was terrible that this happened so suddenly. We lost someone that was such a huge part of Barbra's life and I feel terrible because he was an amazing talent and an amazing person. I would also like to comment on what you stated about Mitt Romney. I agree with you 100%. He is a detriment to society and we are going to be in huge trouble and never out of the mess Bush caused if he gets in office. He is so backward in his way of thinking. I don't understand what this man thinks he's going to achieve besides angering so many women that he already has. I don't understand in all reality how a woman could possibly be a Republican because of her rights in healthcare are being jeopardized in a huge way. To reverse Roe v. Wade from the 70's is insane. That was just yesterday. We've come this far only for that backward Republican man to want us to take 20 steps back. I thought we were supposed to be moving forward. I am definitely for Obama and I'm disgusted by the hate pages and lies that people are putting out on him. When I ask people, if they are, why they would vote for such a man as Romney, they don't have good answers. They don't even know what that mans platform is and how bad it is. This is sheer ignorance. Some aren't even registered to vote. I find this a disturbing fact. I find it basically they are extremely racist. There is no one, not a soul on this planet that could have cleaned up what Bush left us in 4 measly years. Why aren't people waking up to that fact. The Republican's don't give a damn about people. Their bottom line is corporation and more money to line their pockets. Thye're the ones ruining this country. It's shameful. I hope everyone understands what they're getting into if they vote for this man. How he even won the Republican nomination is beyond my wildest dreams, thoughts, I don't understand. He's wrong. He's wrong on every level. He will ruine your lives. Look into the facts. You will find it's true..

I hope this tribute to Marvin Hamlisch will be shown on TV!!

It sounds like an absolutely wonderful night, and a fitting tribute to Marvin Hamlisch. I saw some of the photos from the event, and I was so happy to see a picture of Barbra and Liza together - so much amazing talent (and showbiz history) packed into one incredible photograph. Now, if only they'd record a duet!!! Looking forward to seeing Barbra in Brooklyn on October 13th! Counting the days...

Does anyone know if this tribute was recorded?
