New album "What Matters Most - Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan & Marilyn Bergman" coming August 23

Barbra has long desired to release an album with lyrics only by her longtime collaborators and dear friends, Alan and Marilyn Bergman. That dream will finally be realized with her latest release What Matters Most - Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman, coming August 23.

What Matters Most

The new album, which Barbra personally produced, features ten Bergman songs which she has never previously recorded. Included in the set are the Academy Award-winning song “The Windmills of Your Mind” from the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair, “So Many Stars” which was a hit for Sergio Mendes & Brazil ’66, “Nice ‘n’ Easy” as popularized by Frank Sinatra, and “That Face” as first recorded by Fred Astaire.

Reflecting on her long-held desire to devote an entire album to the amazingly varied and consistently inspired music of the Bergmans, Barbra noted, “Alan and Marilyn have a remarkable gift for expressing affairs of the heart.”

The affection and respect between the lyricists and the artist is quite wonderful, as the Bergmans continued, “When we write a song, we hear Barbra. She makes the connection from the heart to the mind, and it emerges through her voice.”

Also available August 23 will be a deluxe edition of What Matters Most including ten additional, previously released performances of Barbra singing Bergman classics like “The Way We Were,” “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” “Papa Can You Hear Me?” and “Pieces of Dreams.”

SUPERB!!! I love the new cd. It doesn't disappoint in any way! I've always loved the Bergmans and Ms. Streisands interpretations are spot on. A fabulous guest artist in Mr. Boti. And the cherry on top for me is Michel Legrand. I have it everywhere....home, office, car, IPOD. Lovin' it!

I am so excited you are finally coming out with a new CD. You have been greatly missed. My other hope is for you to start in another fantastic movie. My favorite movie that you were in was "Nutts" You were so fantastic in that movie. I thought it was one of your best ever and wished that you would got recognized more for your great performance. You have been my favorite Artist (Singer) since I was thirteen years old.

Welcome Back!!!!! I know there is a God for creating such an Angel as you! You have touched so many peoples lives in the past fifty years. The highlight of my life was taking a picture with your "Star" And by the way your picture of the CD cover is absolutely amazing!!!!! You look so great! I am watching your intimate concert on kbtc right now!

Keep up the great work and as I said earlier, Welcome Back!!!!!!

I am studying the 72 names of Yahveh and I just listened one sing by Barbra, WOW !!! I want to know if she has more. Avinu Malkeinu was the song.

I am overjoyed to hear that Barbra is singing "So Many Stars" on this new CD. I have loved this composition for years ever since I first heard it performed by Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 in the 1960s.

I'd always wondered why she had not sung it. It's tailor-made for her in phrasing and emotion. And it has been at the top of my "wish list" on many fan blogs.

And I, too hope there will be a grand retrospective box set for 2012. There's a wealth of unreleased material (see an extensive list at barbra-archives.com).

And I like to envision that the box set design concentrate on primarily photos of Barbra in the studio(s) over the years actually recording her magic. Plus associates, musicians, etc. that helped her - the actual process. And yes, commentary by Barbra.

Just a thought from a fan of over 40! (ouch) years. Loved every minute of it.

On a lighter note:

Also the same year (if I remember correctly) that Ms. Streisand starred in 'The Way We Were' with Robert Redford, the latter also starred in 'The Sting' with Paul Newman.

I wonder if any of you (including Ms. Streisand) know that the character that Mr. Redford plays in 'The Sting' is based on the real-life exploits (albeit, loosely) of-

Nicky Arnstein?

i just wonder, besides this "sure-to-be-fantastic" cd, what columbia has in plan to celebrate ms streisand 50th year anniversary in entertainment/recording this coming 2012?

any re-release of ms streisand's past albums newly remastered? i really really wish a remastered "YENTL" OST CD with super bright and clear sound among others like HIGHER GROUND etc etc

and

how about an update of the fantastic JUST FOR THE RECORD with newly added materials, say of the 90s, 2000s? remember, the last one ended in the 80s. maybe even with a dvd of music videos, and ms streisand's acceptance speeches for all the majors awards she won these past 50 years...

oh dear i can only wish..... if granted, i died a happy man.

ps - about the deluxe edition : will the bonus songs be given a remastering treatment? i wish again...

As you all know, of course, Mr. and Mrs. Bergman wrote the theme song to 'The Way We Were'; which reminds me:

Before joining Ms. Streisand in the movie of the same name, Robert Redford made, what I believe is, the most underrated movie performance of his career in a movie entitled-"The Candidate".

He plays a liberal Democrat newcomer running for congress against an irascible Conservative Republican incumbent.

He resembles very much a young Bill Clinton in this movie.

However, this movie has a 'bittersweet' ending: The character played by Mr. Redford wins the election, but in the process, he compromises everything he believes in as a liberal Democrat for political expediency. He becomes not much different from the Conservative Republican against whom he was running.

Mr. Gore, would have you believe, in his recent article in Rolling Stone magazine, that President Obama has compromised too much on the issue on 'global warming'.

The truth is that Mr. Gore knows that he and Mr. Clinton themselves 'overcompensated' their Republican opponents for the sake of political expediency on several issues; and for him to attempt to throw Mr. Obama 'under the bus' before the next election on this one issue is hugely irresponsible on his part.

To Ms. Streisand and all else at this website: There is a lot more than just one issue here (global warming). Right now, President Obama is the only thing standing between us and the Conservatives setting us back on many issues.

Please considering accordingly; and have a happy 4th.

Wonderfull idea to bring Barbra where she belongs, the best songs ever written by Bergmans, “The Windmills of Your Mind” and other songs that sure will be the favourites and are included in " What Matter Most", the CD.
Congratulations.
It would be interesting to have Jerry Herman who has also nice songs and could be nice to have Barbra sing some songs of him too in another future production, thanks a lot for letting me have, this suggestion, here in your web .

Fantastic news! When Barbra has sung Bergman lyrics in the past, the songs have always had special meaning and a personal emotional depth to them. I am sure this set of songs will be equally fabulous and special!

Can't wait for the deluxe-set!

i was so excited when I checked my messages today and found an announcement from the Streisand Web Site that she was releasing a new CD with songs by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. I went through the steps of pre-ordering until I got to the part where I had to put in my shipping address. It was there that I went into shock to learn that...for the first time...the company selling this new CD DOES NOT ship to military APO Post Office Boxes. I sent off a query to them, and they confirmed that...yes...they do not. I am completely disappointed in their decision as I see it as a slam again US Government workers outside the US. I have been receiving products from US companies...including Streisand products from her website...at my APO Box in Germany within 7 to 10 days after ordering without any trouble. To exclude APO shipments is UN-AMERICAN and makes Barbra appear to care less about her overseas American fans. Perhaps she doesn't know about this...I would rather believe this to me true rather than the latter. I would like this comment to reach Barbra and get her reaction. If, however, she agrees with this policy, I will dis-enroll from this website and stop buying Streisand products. It would pain me to do this, as I've been following her career...stage, film, CD's/DVDs...for over 51 years...enjoying every moment. Help!

I just pre-ordered my cd and got the downloads of Windmills and That Face......just amazing! That Face is reminiscent of your vocal for What's Up, Doc? so much like You're The Top! Windmills, like the best of your 60's/70's Ballads. To quote a line from one of your most loathed roles, yet my favorite....."Wow, Wow, Wow, fellas!, look at the old girl now Fellas!" You blow the roof off the place....Congratulations Ms Streisand.....70 is the new 40, you are back and in great form! Maybe you will "rock" us out one last time too? In the meantime.....amazing vocals!

Can't wait to buy it! But is there any chance the ten bonus tracks will finally include the long-lost 45rpm single version of "The Way We Were"? It's still never appeared on CD.

Fantastic! What an awesome idea---especially since they are such good friends! Where can I find a complete track listing....

I'm not too sure I have thought out a good comment yet, except to say that I will be standing in line for the first copy of 'What Matters Most', an album that was recorded with love for Alan and Marilyn Bergman. I totally expect one of the most honest (of all the honest) productions from your heart, Barbra. So, from your heart to ours, we have the chance to share your respect and relationship with these wonderful lyricists. Thanks again for allowing us this opportunity. BTW, your photo is truly gorgeous - at least 20 years younger than you are!!

Ms. Streisand, I find it so perfect that you do an album now with this title. I have been a fan since I was 13. Going to see "The Way We Were" convinced me to become a screenwriter, here I am 48 years a divorced mother of four grown children, recently having met my "James Brolin" lol, although I have fought him tooth nail, made every excuse as to why we are not going to work but he doesn't give up. As for my writing I of course wrote my part 2 to TWWW, there has many different verions, I've written other movies and in my heart I know there is something in there that works but nothing has clicked. I've had to be a mom first all these years, one of my daughters has epilepsy and she has been my focus. I have been extremely blessed with my four kids, but we have been through hell. It kills me that I have not been able to give them the life they deserved, my ex husband made life really tough for us. The songs I read above each had such an impact for me. You have had such an impact on my life I wish that I could do for others what you have done for me. God bless and best wishes.

I can't wait to hear her again.......I have been a fan for 50 years!...and still can't get enough.And...my 8 year old Grand Daughter is also excited! We simply LOVE this woman!

Bravo!! This will be a fantastic album of beautiful Bergman songs sung by our greatest singer ever! And potentially Barbra's sixth Number One-selling album in six decades. Now, if only Barbra announces that she is going to do a concert tour to celebrate this album (as well as her 50-year career), this will be the greatest news ever!
