Re: Barbra's Statement on Proposition 8
Larry Kramer has always been a prickly, acerbic individual. But socially progressive movements in the United States have always been lead by people with strong egos. If they didn't have big egos they wouldn't have been able to be leaders. I don't think Barbra Streisand is a hypocrite, as Larry Kramer says. If I remember correctly, she just didn't have the timing to direct a movie based on Mr. Kramer's play. Maybe the company backing the movie didn't like the source material and didn't offer financing for a proposed movie. All these are "maybes", by the way. I don't know either Larry Kramer or Barbra Streisand. I'm going by what I remember reading in the newspapers and magazine interviews.

Re: Barbra's Statement on Proposition 8
It’s curious that while the Proposition 8 was being declared unconstitutional in California, I was holding a heated argument with one of my older brothers in Spain because he said something peyoratory about gays that angered me and made me come to tears.
No members of my family or friends is gay, so I analyzed my over-reaction and discovered that my pain was caused for the deception of realizing that my dear brother was not as smart and good as I always had believed.
As a result I have learned that the discriminators are the ones who deserve pity
Fortunately five year ago same-sex marriage was approved in Spain and now I hope you also get the approbation of the law.
Congratulations for the good new!

Re: Barbra's Statement on Proposition 8...Larry Kramer's Reaction
I was totally mortified to read Larry Kramer's reaction to your statement on Prop 8, Barbra. I know you appreciate the truth out of people. But there's a fine line between speaking of truth and speaking out of line. His "reaction" to your statement does NOT speak on behalf of the gay community as a whole. It seems his reaction is more tainted with bitterness and resentment. It appears that he's only looking out for his own interests in getting his play made into a movie.
I posted a comment here on your site on another topic recently. And I commented about not being so sure that you should make "Normal Heart" because I felt it just wasn't the right project for you. Regardless if you were passionate about it or not, the project was already tainted from the start. Yes, it's been a few years since the topic of AIDS has been in the public eye. But I didn't think we need a movie as such to put the word or awareness out. It's out there. And "we" all know what we must, and should do, to conquer this epidemic. The critics would've had a field day on you, and Jason, if you'd made this movie. Don't put yourself through so much greif. You've given us more than we really deserved.
As a gay citizen myself, I personally don't feel the need to wave a flag or march the streets and make a spectacle of myself just to get my point across. I have nothing to be ashamed of nor feel the need to shove it down other people's throat just to be heard. I live in such a well scrubbed, typical family oriented neighborhood in San Fernando valley where neighbors walk the streets with their kids in strollers and Golden Retrievers on leash, American flags hanging at every doorstep come 4th of July. My being a day to day citizen at work and at home with my partner, with my family, with my neighbors and with everyone else that I meet should be enough to convince them that I am just as equal and happy as they are. And by doing as we have, we're more well received with respect by everyone because they see the true people that we are just by being ourselves, rather than depicted by the news or media.
So in close, as a gay citizen, I do apologize on Mr. Kramer's behalf. Please let it be known that you do have supporters who actually use their brains and think before they speak. Congratulations on your continued endeavors. You've done well!

Re: Barbra's Statement on Proposition 8
Thank you for the statement. Judge Walker's opinion is a perfectly worded rebuttal to the bigotry and animus that were fused together by people who would prefer the United States by run as a theocracy. Education and exposure are the only remedy. From reading the opinion, it is hard to imagine this ruling will be overturned either by the 9th Circuit or the Supreme Court, even with its current make up. Our community thanks you for continuing to use your voice not only to gift us with beautiful and timeless music, but to speak out for the fair treatment of all taxpaying US citizens. All the best to you and your husband.
