Barbra Remembers Arthur Laurents
MAY 7, 2011, 10:29 am
Arthur and I go way back to "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" in 1962. Then
we did "The Way We Were" in 1973 and we were about to do "Gypsy" together.
He created people you care about because he cared about people. I spoke to
him a few weeks ago and he sounded so strong, as always. He was lucky to
have lived a full and creative life up 'til the very end.
I'll miss working with him again. - Barbra Streisand

one who saw Barbra Streisand in “Hello Dolly” and did not think she gave an incredible performance is completely off base. She took the roll and ran with it. She may have been a little too young to play a widow.

There was great sentiment in America for Carol Channing not have been offered the roll. I adore Carol Channing, and have seen her in “Hello Dolly” twice on Broadway. She is one of our great Broadway actresses

RE: BARBRA STREISAND AND "GYPSY"
Barbra Streisand is, without a doubt, the single greatest entertainer of our century. She is in complete control of her career and is not going to make any gross mistakes in what may just be her swansong in motion picture musicals. "Too old"…"too young"…the comments have gone this way just about her entire career. Back in 1969, the entire world cried out “too young” when it came to playing the roll of Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly”. There was great sentiment in America for Carol Channing not have been offered the roll. I adore Carol Channing, and have seen her in “Hello Dolly” twice on Broadway. She is one of our great Broadway actresses — but Carol Channing could NEVER have carried this demanding roll in the 1969 motion picture. She had neither the voice nor the screen persona to pull off a huge $26 million dollar production. “Hello Dolly”, although not a major box office winner when the film was first released in 1969, went on to score record breaking sales when released in VHS and DVD and has exceeded the total VHS/DVD sales of “The Sound of Music”. Anyone who saw Barbra Streisand in “Hello Dolly” and did not think she gave an incredible performance is completely off base. She took the roll and ran with it. She may have been a little too young to play a widow, but she sang and danced her heart out in the film — and it has become a beloved motion picture classic.
Every film Ms. Streisand has made has been special. This lady does not know how to do anything second rate — yes, she is a perfectionist -- she is that way for her fans — she never has wanted to disappoint a single fan!
Her immense talent as an actress, her amazing vocal abilities and her proven record as a major motion picture star in a vast array of musical and non-musical roles, has made her our most beloved female performer in history.
Any project that Barbra Streidand becomes involved in with be a huge success — and that includes "Gypsy". If Ethel Merman could do "Gypsy", believe me when I say, Streisand can do "Gypsy". She is one of the last great superstars of our lifetime — she will make her last major musical motion picture a stunning world class event. After all, this picture may very well likely be her swansong — and she will leave NOTHING to chance!
I predict "Gypsy" starring Barbra Streisand will be the single largest grossing musical motion picture since “The Sound of Music” and that it will eclipse the single greatest career in entertainment history.

Barbra:
Sorry about Arthur Laurents and sorry about "Gypsy."
How about you and Hugh Jackman doing the musical "Sunset Boulevard" and Mike Nichols directing? You would all be amazing!
Keep on creating!

My love for Barbra Streisand ♥
My Love for Barbra Streisand...
As you may see from the title, I love Barbra Streisand. I think she is THE most wonderful, creative, vocally gifted etc woman in the world. I admire her for what she believes in, and how she always says what's on her mind. I enjoy singing and acting as much as her! I want to be JUST like her when I grow up, I am only 13 by the way. My favorite movies by her are the following: Yentl, Funny Girl, Funny Lady, The Mirror Has Two Faces, The Way We Were, Prince of Tides, What's up Doc, The Owl and the Pussycat, Nuts etc etc... She is my idol, and my PERSONAL and CARERR inspiration. Barbra has taught me to reach for the highest because when you don't, you just settle for less than you originally wanted. She has also taught me to chaise my dreams. I love her style and her nose! I am very happy she DID NOT change it, it's what makes her unique, plus her nail, I just love those nails SO much! I hope I get to meet her one day, If I did get a chance to meet her, I would probably faint instantly! I would also pour into tears probably! I just love her so much, more than she will EVER EVER EVER ever.. know.

Re: Barbra Remembers Arthur Laurents
I was also saddened to hear of the loss of Arthur Laurents, he was so fortunate to have lived a long life, and also one of quality to have friends like you. When people such as yourself who have achieved a sense of immortality and status, take the time to acknowledge those who have touched their lives, it sets an example for all of us . I recently lost my 29 year old brother David who was not only a musician, but a real mensch. He lived such a short life but such a full one I had no idea how many lives he touched in his short time on earth until he was gone.
I carry him inside me always and I am back to pursuing my writing, I owe it to him and myself to give my best effort. Its the first time I ever lost something I could not replace.
I know this sounds absurd, but here it goes, My name is Michael Evan Mann
I am originally from Boston I studied acting and screenwriting at Lee Strasberg, and also with Richard Walter at U.C.L.A., I am 46 years old and after my kid brother died I went back to Boston College finished up my last 5 classes after 20 years to get my English Literature degree.
My life has been like a Joni Mitchell song. " So many things I would have done
but clouds got in my way".
This letter is like a message in a bottle that I hope reaches you. Okay I know this is going to sound nuts and would probably get from most people the yeah, yeah, response. For the last 2 years I have been working on a sequel to The Way We Were.
it came about as fate. I know a lot of the stories behind the sequel and all the complications involved. I wrote this from the heart and afterwords happen to see you and Robert Redford on the actors studio , I was amazed it was as if I channeling both of you in this story, everything you both said and cared about resonated throughout
this script. This is my Citizen Kane. I may never write anything like this again in my life. Its not just a story but it has life to it. This story, when it takes place, what happens, the character development is so perfect, it can only come from divine
inspiration. There will never be a better script for a sequel to this film than the one I wrote, I promise in your words, " You will not be sorry." This is the script the Robert
Redford would say I see the lightning in the bottle again.
I do not care about fame and fortune, and whenever I had any money I either spent it or gave it away. I only care that this story be brought to life, I do this to keep a promise I made to my brother before he died. If you read it, and saw
all the beauty in it, you could not help yourself, to share it with the world.
Sincerely Michael Evan Mann

I like it when Barbra mentions the people she's worked with.
Re: Barbra Remembers Arthur Laurents
I'm so sorry for your loss. You have so many people who you have worked with closely through the years. Even though there was a reported issue with Gypsy, his death must be a blow and surprise. RIP, Mr Laurents.

Perhaps, Barbra, you can be inspired in your performance for the film partly in memory of Arthur. Good luck and do your best for the movie.
Re: Barbra Remembers Arthur Laurents
I met Mr. Laurents in 2004. We honored him at the William Inge Theatre Festival in Independence, Kansas. (I am the former special projects coordinator for the Inge Center for the Arts.) He had an on'ry time dealing with the town that turned on Inge when he was still alive. Still, I think he found that the children and grandchildren of that generation was a bit more loving and appreciative. He was very kind to me. He helped me do my job! I will never forget his smile nor his graciousness towards me. Thank you for posting this tribute about him here. The theatre lost a giant this week. -- Beth Tuszynski, Newton, KS
