Back to Brooklyn debuting as CD/DVD package on November 25

Columbia Records has announced the simultaneous release of a CD and a CD/DVD package of Barbra’s critically acclaimed 2012 “Back To Brooklyn” concert, set to be released on November 25. Filmed and recorded over two nights, the CD and DVD capture the superstar’s celebratory return to her hometown of Brooklyn, NY.

Pre-order the CD/DVD now on Amazon.com!

A unique and compelling attraction of "Back To Brooklyn" is that the CD and CD/DVD combo features nine never previously performed songs by the star in concert. Ms. Streisand is the only recording artist to have accomplished #1 albums in five consecutive decades. She has achieved 51 gold albums, 30 platinum and 13 multi-platinum. Streisand has also earned eight gold DVDs, six of which have gone platinum and three of which have gone multi-platinum.

The DVD provides biographical video and still photo images of Barbra’s childhood and early career. The evening marked her first musical performance in her native Brooklyn since she departed at age 16 to pursue her acting career and became one of the most popular and famous musical performers of her time. Throughout the concert, she reflects upon her years growing up in Brooklyn, and to mark the occasion, she commissioned special lyrics for two songs:

ACT I opens with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” which she turns into an homage to “the Brooklyn docks, the nova lox” and other fond memories of the sights and sounds of her youth. When she triumphantly sings, “I’ve come home at last,” the audience rises from their seats with a thunderous welcome back ovation.

ACT II pays tribute to the people and places in Brooklyn today, with a re-written lyric to Cole Porter’s “You’re The Top”: “You’re the top, you’re a Brooklyn trolley… you’re the top you’re a hot bialy!”

In her own words, the evening is also about “the songs that I love, written by people who I love.” Through their words and music, she pays tribute to her friends Alan & Marilyn Bergman (“Nice ‘n’ Easy”/ “That Face”/ “The Way He Makes Me Feel”), Jule Styne (“Gypsy”/ “Funny Girl”) and Leonard Bernstein (“Make Our Garden Grow”/ “Somewhere”). She pays loving tribute to her friend Marvin Hamlisch, who passed away as she was preparing for the concert. Her sentimental rendition of “The Way We Were” featuring Hamlisch’s original movie score arrangement is heart-aching and life-affirming.

Among the many highlights of the evening, the first time ever pairing of Barbra and her son Jason Gould singing Irving Berlin’s “How Deep Is The Ocean,” had the audience in awe. Few could have imagined that Gould, an accomplished actor in his own right, also possessed his mother’s way with a song. Blended in harmony, their two voices combined are simply magic. Barbra also shares a special birthday video Jason made for her, which features his highly moving solo version of Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy.”

Barbra also shares the stage for three songs with the extraordinary trumpet player, Chris Botti. Botti adds his instrumental sophistication to a medley of “What’ll I Do” and “My Funny Valentine.” Then he weaves in and around Barbra’s vocals on two of her own compositions from the soundtrack to “A Star Is Born”—“Lost Inside Of You” and the Academy Award-winning “Evergreen (Love Theme from “A Star Is Born)."

The young Italian singing quartet, Il Volo, accompanies Barbra on a moving version of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile.” For the entire concert, Barbra is surrounded by a 60-member strong orchestra comprised of New York’s finest musicians, conducted by the renowned composer and arranger, William Ross.

The DVD contains two standout bonus features—Jason Gould’s solo performance of the classic Leon Russell song, “This Masquerade,” and a documentary entitled “I Remember Barbra,” featuring interviews and anecdotes with people who either knew or remembered Barbra as she was growing up in Brooklyn.

With the CD, DVD and Deluxe CD/DVD, Barbra achieves yet another career milestone and proves along the way that you can take the girl out of Brooklyn, but you can’t take Brooklyn out of the girl.

“Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn” will also air on Great Performances on Friday, November 29 at 9 p.m. (check local listings) as part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival.

Dear Barbar Streisand, Nothing would give me more pleasure than getting my personal female friend a chance to talk to you or even better get her to meet you in person. I believe, no I know, she is one of your best kept-secret admirers. Cynthia, my friend, lives, eats and breaths Barbar Streisand. She gets so excited at the mention of your name. I was able to obtain one of your books as a gift for her and I think she has slept with said book for two weeks. How more exciting for Cynthia to be able to met you or possibly with a phone call. In so many words she would just die, hopefully not. Thank you for any concerns you may give me. Sincerely, James B. Prewitt

I was a junior in college when I discovered Barbra in 1965. I have followed her entire career, seen all her movies and at one time I owned every record she made. I saw her here in Phoenix in concert and even though I could only afford the "cheap" seats in the nosebleed section, I was enthralled. My collectiont is now on CD's but it never ceases to bring tears of joy and emotion every time I see and hear her sing. I just saw her perform with Chris Botti and her incredible son Jason. Never have heard him perform before. He's inherited some of his mother's incredible talent. I will NEVER delete the Back to Brooklyn recording from my DVR. I know I'm no different that millions of other fans all over the world, but I just want her to know that she has inspired my entire life with her music, acting and philanthrophy for the most important causes in our country.

Wouldn't surprise me if PBS stations have BTB Blu-ray exclusive for donors on Friday night and during the subsequent repeat telecasts.

Craig-BarbraStreisand.com:

I agree with the others... Barbra deserves the best video presentation possible. I'm very disappointed that there isn't a blu-ray version available. Is one planned? I may sit this release out in the hopes that a blu-ray comes down the road. Thanks!

Looking forward to it!
Donnie and i were so lucky to get to see her performing in Brooklyn!

Dear Barbra,

What's up with purchasing your CD/DVD de Luxe in Europe? No way to find it for region 2. I saw you in Chicago and London (instead of France). Now we would like to buy the package in Europe and cannot find it. Please ask Columbia to put it on the market in Europe. Love you, Cristina - France

This is a real scoop for everybody. This is an interesting blog page. I do hope you could do some more post. Good job!

What a night watching Barbra at the Barclays Center! Her rendition of "The way he makes me feel" the "Gypsy" medley, "Make our garden grow", Didn't we", "Lost inside of you", etc.
Her sense of houmor, her ease at performing, her interaccion with the audience plus sharing with the many fans of all ages. I have seen her in concert 4 times already and once even on the street on Central Park West with her husband Jim while me and my spouse were walking our dog at the time. What a Lady, what an artist...

..and now i have to run to tell the spanish speaking fans these news in my facebook page "Barbra Streisand en espanol"

Hai Barbra,

I Pre-ordered two CD/DVD's for my friend and I. We saw you on June 6th in Amsterdam. Thank you for this CD/DVD. I have quite a collection now but about this concert I can say: I saw this in Amsterdam. Amazing. I can't wait till it is November 25!

What a great birthday present to look forward to, as I celebrate on 27th Nov. Only thinking rhe other day I wonder when the next musical gem would be released

are we getting the package in the UK , it's not listed on Amazon o r other music sites ?

AT LAST! Thank you, Barbra. I've been waiting all year for this announcement, and I get it one day before the anniversary of seeing and hearing you perform in Chicago last year. An added plus is that I get to hear so much material that you did not do in Chicago.
Please, please, please next time you release a compilation album let He Could Show Me be on there. One of my favorite songs you have ever recorded. And while I'm begging on bended knee, if you do another movie album (Second Feature?) please record Long Ago and Far Away for the album.
I've been your fan ever since I heard the single People on radio. It gave me goosebumps and my hair stood on end and I cried. Such beauty! I've never heard such a God given instrument in my entire life.
Thank you, God bless you, and I love you.
Your fan Jim in Arkansas (the nut who was right by the stage at all of your 1970s performances in Las Vegas - and who has written you so many times!)

Why no blu-ray???? If a blu-ray was offered, perhaps Roslyn's performances with Barbra can be added as an Easter egg?? C'mon, let's use the highest quality media when it's a Streisand product!

Looking forward to purchasing the latest tour DVD, but disappointed that Roslyn wasn't included as we were all expecting to see her in the show as well ! Not fair !!!

Well, it has been a rough day and year so far, but this is news that is cheering me up!

I am still in tune...as it was just yesterday I said, "Barbra, should be releasing the CD/DVD of the Back to Brooklyn concert soon." SO here it is in my email today... the announcement! I only have to wait till Nov 25th...aaahhhh it can not come quick enough.

I am still amazed that I was able to see nine out of twelve cities on the US tour and in addition I have seen Barbra sing live 33 times. YES, really 33 times! I even had tickets to some of the Europe shows but alas life intervened and unfortunately I was unable to go. Sad waste of a lot of money and a huge disappointment to not be able to see you Barbra sing live some more...oh well. Never did I really believe that I would hear you sing live once. "Thank you for making a dream of a lifetime come true." Oh how I hold onto the magic in all those moments of pure and beautiful joy you have given me in my lifetime Barbra! And to witness both Jason and yourself singing together the first time in Philly was something I will never forget...
I am so proud of both of you!

To see all my "Barbra friends" again is just icing on the cake...and to be able to see Allison heading backstage with her book in hand to meet you Barbra was just as special for me as I know it was for her because Barbra you have made so many PEOPLE happy and made their dreams come true. "Here is to life" Barbra as mine would be nothing without you in it.

Your tribute to Marvin and the "chocolate donuts" will always be a fond memory in so many ways! L'Chaim

I am still believing you will come along and share the ride of "making our garden grow" with my business idea...I am still waiting on you!

Much love and devotion,
Lynn

I am so excited about this, especially since Ms Streisand performs a number of songs that are new to her live set. I've just pre-ordered ye deluxe combo on Amazon. I became a Streisand fan in high school--and now, at age 62, her Work is one of the foundations of joy and peace of mind in my absurd life. Her music is a gift of love, and I cherish it.

This is the treat everyone has been crossing fingers and waiting for. For me, the most interesting facet of all of Barbra's concerts is she can sing a song she's been singing for decades and bring the most unexpected new insights and feelings to it. This is unusual among singers; most at some point freeze their performances of a song and mentally reference how they've always done it rather than living the song each time they sing it. Which means if they first sang a song at the age of 26 they are still singing it the same way when they are 46 but it is certain at 46 they are not the same person as when they are 26. Many singers are able to re-record their hits many times over many years and produce the same recording each time. But Barbra always sees a song differently each time, and sometime the difference is subtle and sometime the difference is striking. The great Billie Holiday said that she really did try to do a song the same way twice when it was called for but she was incapable of doing it. She had to feel every song she sang and when she felt a song it came out different each time. If you heard her recording session tapes you'd be struck by that; she did one session in the late 1930s where she tackled "I Got A Right to Sing the Blues" and in the middle of the session asked if the tempo could be altered. And she ended up with a ballad version and an up-tempo version. Her Columbia recording of "God Bless The Child" has no resemblance to her later Decca recording. Gordon Jenkins, the strings master who arranged the Decca recording, said he wept when she did the first take, she was so genuine and so moving and so gorgeous. Billie, who was very picky about the work of other lady singers, certainly if she were still with us would embrace Barbra's artistry and Barbra's honesty.

I too am looking forward to re-living the experience of Barbra, Brooklyn and New York in a whirlwind trip from UK last October. My only disappointment will be that the most beautiful track I had heard in years is not included! This was Chris Botti's instrumental duet with Lucia Micarelli on 'Emmanuel'. Whoever chose to include this in the concern gave me an emotional interlude (as Barbra was off in the wings preparing for her next instalment) that I will never forget. So emotional to hear this track for my first time, and every time since! I am sure Barbra chose it to honour her late father. Hope so! Thanks for the introduction.

Any new on the 12 disc box set yet?

Many thanks to all in Barbra World for keeping us updated.

Regards,
Micky Spin (UK)

Dear Barbra Team,

Would you please also release the concert on Blu-Ray?
Like you did for the previous concert.

We live in the era of High Definition and DVD is quite obsolete.

Yours
Marcin / Paris, FR

Best news today!
Is this a DVD video of the actual concert or audio only of the concert? It's confusing.
And if not, besides the PBS special, when might we see a DVD of the concert?
Fabulous news.

Note from Admin: The DVD is the full-length video of the concert. The CD is audio only. Hope this helps. Craig-BarbraStreisand.com

A little disappointed that Roslyn isn't one of the bonus features. I know she didn't perform in Brooklyn, but she was an integral part of the tour.

I will purchase, at some point in the future,as this season, brings so many items, on santas, list that it wouldn't possible before Christmas. But i will purchase something because you are my # 1 Favorite Female Artist of all time.
