THE SHOW:

Here’s how the LA Times described your show:
The evening’s talky rhythm (the show had more asides than a Shakespeare tragedy) put the audience immediately under the spell of her folksy grandiosity. Streisand … isn’t just a star — she’s a world view, a style of being, an entire cosmology, with the highest possible thread-count sheets. You don’t just come for the music; you come for the whole church service. The sermon, broken up into bits, is inseparable from the songs.
How would you describe it?Read more »

Remember Whitewater and the “travel office” non-scandals of the 1990s? The Republicans and certain media outlets wasted the nation’s time and millions of dollars in pursuit of alleged wrongdoing by First Lady Hillary Clinton. It was all sound and fury signifying nothing. Two decades later, the same script is being revisited about the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which the President and Secretary Clinton clearly labeled a “terrorist act”.Read more »

On Monday, April 22, 2013, Barbra Streisand was honored at the Film Society of Lincoln Center's 40th Anniversary Chaplin Award Gala. She was introduced by President Bill Clinton, who presented her with the award. Here are her complete remarks as delivered on stage at Avery Fisher Hall.

Mr. President, my dear Mr President. Thank you for taking the time to be here with us tonight. It means so much to me, especially given how busy you are, doing important things for people all around the world. You’re a wonder, an inspiration and a very loyal friend, thank you.Read more »

At a gala on Monday night Barbra Streisand will receive the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Chaplin Award for lifetime achievement. The society cited in particular her work on “Yentl,” the first movie to credit a woman as director, writer, producer and star, along with other big-screen turns behind the camera (“Prince of Tides” and “The Mirror Has Two Faces”) and in front of it (“Funny Girl” and “For Pete’s Sake”).

Before the gala Ms. Streisand answered readers’ questions, and hundreds took to the ArtsBeat blog to declare their affection and post their queries.Read more »

I was very saddened to hear of Allison Waldman's passing Monday. She had been struggling bravely for many years to beat cancer.

I knew Allison over the years as a very good writer and a kind and loyal fan of mine who created and wrote "The Barbra Files" magazine and "The Barbra Streisand Scrapbook"... she was always wonderful to me. She was dedicated to the accuracy of the news she conveyed, and she shaped her stories with great style.Read more »

I’m so saddened to learn of Phil’s passing.

We first worked together in 1967 when I did a free concert in Central Park. His brilliance at capturing sound was immediately evident.

Later we worked together on the film “A Star Is Born” where Phil was able to record me singing live, including “Evergreen”. In the next decade we worked on the soundtrack to “Yentl” and many other recordings.Read more »

The horrible tragedy in Newtown, CT has brought to the forefront a much needed and long overdue national conversation regarding the lack of gun control and mental health services in our country. It makes no sense that automatic and semi automatic weapons are available for public sale. The U.S. has more guns and more gun violence than any other civilized country in the world. And since 2009, the National Alliance on Mental Illness has reported that states have cut more than $1.6 billion in general funds from their state mental health agency budgets.Read more »

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, I can’t comprehend how there are still climate change deniers out there. Yet there are. These last few days, we’ve all seen pictures of New Jersey and New York LITERALLY under water. And the extreme droughts in the Midwest, the floods in Vermont and the fires in Colorado and Texas this year only validate what nearly every leading scientist has confirmed: Climate change is REAL and causes extreme weather conditions.Read more »

Obama vs. Romney: A Clear Choice

In this election, the people of America have to make a choice between two candidates with very different values, visions and solutions to the most pressing problems facing our country. The question voters need to ask themselves when they walk into the voting booth on November 6th is: “Will the country be better off returning to the policies of George W. Bush’s Administration?”Read more »

"The new laws requiring US citizens to produce photo IDs at the poll are designed to deprive elderly and minority citizens of the precious right to cast their vote. These regressive laws are themselves the most dangerous voter fraud threatening American democracy." Barbra Streisand

Observation of the Day:

“In the 23 years that Democrats have occupied the White House since John F. Kennedy took office, in January 1961, non-government jobs have increased by nearly 42 million, compared with 24 million jobs created during 28 years under Republican presidents.”

---Bloomberg.com

Republicans don't want to spend money to strengthen the economy, but we have to. The people need it , children need it, our infrastructure needs it, and the economy needs it . FDR spent money to pull our country out of the Great Depression. It will work again and it’s the only way to get people back to work.

After nine long years, over eight billion taxpayer dollars spent, nearly 4,500 US soldiers killed, over 32,000 seriously wounded, and more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, we now can assert that our government invaded Iraq based on a big lie. Why does this all matter now? Because the man who fabricated Iraq’s WMD program recently taped a two-part interview airing this week on BBC 2 to confirm what most Americans, outside the opinion elite, only heard rumours about but never knew for sure: that the public was sold a lie as the reason for invading Iraq.Read more »

Larry Kramer does not need me to publicize his beautiful play. It stands on its own. For the last time – I will answer his complaints, which rewrite history.

When I saw the play in 1985 I was very moved and immediately contacted Larry to acquire the rights. After going through several drafts with Larry, I hired another writer to develop a screenplay that was faithful to Larry’s play -- but adapting it to make it more cinematic. It was finished in 1995. Ralph Fiennes and Kenneth Branagh were interested in doing the version that I oversaw.Read more »

“The most truthful part of a newspaper is the advertisements”

---Thomas Jefferson

Boy, Barbra must sell a lot of papers.  That tabloid keeps re-telling the same lies.

I asked my wife if I could borrow her Truth Alert to respond to the latest tabloid nonsense, an outrageous story that I oppose her doing "Gypsy." These scandal sheet guys only print stuff that is the exact opposite of the truth. I'm already lined up to buy the first ticket for that film. Her youthful beauty will perfectly complement her singing and performance. But the point here is that tabloids only traffic in bad news, bad news that they have to maliciously make up in Barbra's case.Read more »

I was just made aware of a ridiculous story in one of those weekly rags. This is just to say that the story is untrue in every respect, just unmitigated, sloppy, and malicious invention.  The madness of the constant inaccuracy of these publications is evidenced by the fact that in this recent story the main photo they use of "Jason" is not even Jason!

One of the tabloids is recycling a fabricated story which we truth-alerted as false in 2004.

It's ridiculous to dredge up a 7 year old story about having a polyp removed. It must be a slow news day.

I’ve endured Larry Kramer’s outbursts in the past, not wishing to dignify them with a response. But at a time when we are all pulling together to achieve such giant steps toward gay equality, it is anguishing to me to have my devotion to this cause so distorted. I think my efforts for the gay community and my immersion in securing its constitutional entitlement and other equitable rights is quite evident and a matter of record.Read more »

I was happy to hear recently that the Loew's Kings Theater in Brooklyn, New York will be undergoing renovations for a reopening in 2014 . It was one of those beautiful old movie palaces of the past. To clarify the ridiculous assertions relating to Barbra Streisand's participation in the new "We Are The World," the recording of which I attended with her, Barbra hit it on her first take, but then asked Patti Austin, who was producing the vocal session, if she could do a few more to see what else she might come up with. Patti thought the first take was perfect, and she thought the fourth one was more perfect. They stopped at "more perfect."

I discovered in a recent book of rather serious intent, and in which I was otherwise fairly treated, that the author chose to print some of the silliest fabricated tales about me even after acknowledging that they were “perhaps more apocryphal than true.” I was surprised that this author would not even bother to check his facts. I don’t care if someone doesn’t like my work or tells a story that is unflattering…as long as it’s the truth.Read more »
