Dear Barbra Streisand,
I think that you have every right to voice your opinion about public policy and anything else you want to talk about. You've talked before on your website about how politics in Hollywood goes back at least to the forties. Orson Welles, Lena Horne, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn and John Garfield were all noted liberals in the studio dominated system of that time period. The environment of motion pictures has dramatically changed since the nineteen forties. It's important to talk about celebrity and public policy since the contemporary communications distributions systems of this country are tied up with multinational conglomerates like Time-Warner, AT&T, Sony, Verizon and NBC-Universal-Comcast. Certain people on the right seem to be fixated on the idea that liberal actors, writers and producers dictate the content of the movies being produced. I would say that as a broad statement, the motion pictures and television shows being produced in this country, are obviously profit driven first and concerned with quality of content second. Let's make a distinction between "celebrity" and "artist". The artist's responsibility in 2010 United States, is to keep the quality of the discourse up to a high level. In a democracy, everyone has a voice, from the prisoner, to the criminal, from the priest to the president.
I am your biggest fan. I loved thougout my childhood and I respect your opinions. I am in aww of you. I wish I could meet you some day. I am a singer and of course cannot compare to your voice and acting. But I love you so much!
