There has been a lot of conversation lately about how the ability to identify with another person's circumstance makes one unqualified to wear the judicial robe. Since President Obama's nomination of Judge Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, the word empathy has taken a beating. Whether liberal or conservative, they all agreed on one thing: He’s dead. He’s toast. His presidency is over. The only thing the professional chattering class disagreed on was whether Obama would face a primary challenge from a liberal Democrat in 2012 — and who his Republican challenger (and successor in the White House) might be.Read more »

There’s a famous Norman Rockwell painting titled “Freedom of Speech,” depicting an idealized American town meeting. The painting, part of a series illustrating F.D.R.’s “Four Freedoms,” shows an ordinary citizen expressing an unpopular opinion. His neighbors obviously don’t like what he’s saying, but they’re letting him speak his mind.Read more »

Among the many issues voters need to consider in this campaign is this vital fact: The next president is likely to appoint several Supreme Court justices. Those choices will determine the future of the law, and of some of Americans' most cherished rights.

Rush Limbaugh is plugging a new book whose conservative agenda attacks liberals. But the facts the book alleges about Barbra Streisand, as reported in the WorldNetDaily website, just aren't factual. The website, celebrating Limbaugh's breathless praising of the book, says, "It points out how Barbra Streisand, while lamenting the way labor unions are treated in this country, gets all of her movies produced in Canada."Read more »
