JULIAN FELLOWES TO ADAPT SCREENPLAY FOR STREISAND & SILVER’S GYPSY IN DEVELOPMENT AT UNIVERSAL PICTURES

LOS ANGELES, CA.
March 13, 2012.

Producers Barbra Streisand and Joel Silver have set Academy Award®-winning writer Julian Fellowes to pen the screenplay adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents’ Tony Award winning musical, Gypsy, which Ms. Streisand and Mr. Silver are currently developing for Universal Pictures. Ms. Streisand will portray “Momma Rose” in the new version, her first musical film since Yentl in which the Oscar®-winning actress and iconic singer starred, produced, co-wrote and directed in 1983.

Fellowes won the Original Screenplay Academy Award® for Gosford Park and most recently earned the Emmy and Golden Globe for creating and writing the acclaimed miniseries, Downton Abbey. His musical theatre work includes adapting the script for Disney’s stage production of Mary Poppins.

Gypsy has exhilarated audiences on both stage and screen since its first Broadway run in 1959 with Ethel Merman. Since then, the compelling story based on the memoirs of the famous striptease artist, Gypsy Rose Lee, has spawned numerous reincarnations including the 1962 film starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood, four Broadway revivals, as well as a made-for-television movie.

A celebrated artist, Streisand has gathered Oscar®, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Directors Guild of America and Golden Globe awards, winning Oscars® for both, Best Actress (Funny Girl) and Best Original Song (for her composition of “Evergreen” from her production of A Star Is Born).

Gypsy marks Silver’s first foray into Broadway movie musicals after a career of producing several commercially-successful films including the Lethal Weapon, The Matrix, Die Hard and Sherlock Holmes franchises.

I have been a loyal Barbra fan since the 60's, I can't wait to see her on the big screen again, she is the Greatest Star and always will be!!!! We miss seeing you on the big screen, I know at one time you were thinking of doing the musical version of "sunset Boulevard ,I wish it would come to be your voice is perfect for that show, Also think of doing something with Lea Michelle she adores you and I just love it when she does one of your songs on "glee" plus one of my favorite photo's of you in her locker ,I think the two of you would be great together, but there will never be another Barbra!!! Love you lots. John Miller

I didn't think there was a better Moma Rose than Betty Buckley.

Then I didn't think there could be a better Momma Rose than Patti Lupone.

I was wrong.

You've won hands down, Barbra. Cannot wait for this one!

I worked on les mis from the start in my 18 years with the RSC.
But YENTL the one.
THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY PRODUCTION OF YENTL THE MUSICAL
DIRECTED BY BARBRA STREISAND.

OH...MY....GOODNESS!
I can hardly breathe. I may pass out as I am typing.
I love Barbara Streisand... and I love Lord Julian Fellowes. What an incredible team this is!
I can't wait to see what comes of it! Ohhh... thank you both! You must really love your fans. lol! Sticking out tongue

Thank you thank you thank you thank you! lol

Hey, I hope Barbara wears that big, dark eye makeup on stage. I just loved that look on her. Seriously, I miss that! Since she's going to be playing in Gypsy, you'd think she'd have to do that anyway.

Gosh, we can't wait, Ms. Streisand! You'll blow all the critics away. I mean, really, this woman could be reciting the alphabet, and we'd all be hanging on every letter... literally!

@mikie1 really? Do you have to be so creepy?

Well anyway, I'm excited for this films as anyone else would be. I don't think that Ms. Streisand will have hard troubles potraying the role, but I do think it'll be a little bit different then some of the other stuff she has done. She did give us a good sense on how "exotic" her acting can get by the movie meet the fockers. Then Hello Dolly showed us she can be spirited and a fast talker. This will be a fun one to watch and I can't wait for it to come out.

I think Barbra should direct Gypsy, after all she is an accomplished director and no one will get it right like she can.

There have been so many Gypsys before--this better be the Gypsy to end all Gypsys! Streisand should use her own talents, plus psychically channel both William Wyler and Gene Kelly! (Someone call Shirley MacLaine!)

wow thats a shock ive watched yentl 1,000,000,000 times it deserves a reward !!!!

I'm glad this project is moving forward, and I am hoping you will prove all the naysayers wrong. I just heard an audio interview with your Mother from the opening night of "Funny Girl" on Broadway where you Mother (proudly) said that "she gets her talent from her Mother" and "she gets her intelligence from her Father". After listening to this interview, I see where you will get your inspiration from for the part of Mama Rose. Best wishes and keep up the good work!

Well, we will just have to agree to disagree on that one. Actually, maybe TMHTF didn't work for some, but for others it did. Just a matter of perspective, that's all. So, before we tear down what she can and cannot do, maybe this might be too radical an idea, but I think that maybe we should let it happen FIRST before we criticize what parts won't work. Just my humble opinion though, what do I know.

p.s. Thanks Barbra for posting the women's military conference results. Much appreciated. Smiling

her age is not the only problem for me...i really don't want to hear "mama rose" with perfect vocal diction and sung to perfection...if bab's is willing to change her style of singing to suit the character and not worry about looking gorgeous and that the sets match her makeup and costumes,,,yes she could pull it off...but looking back at the "mirror has two faces" were the original character was overweight but all barbra did was add layers to her frame and expected the audience to buy it, it didn't work...for years i was on the band wagon that barbra could do anything but age & reality have now made me not so sure...would love to be proven wrong because i really respect her many talents and have loved her for 50 years

sorry guys normally i would be right there with you...but not on this one...it's just not her age but her perfect voice and perfect diction are just not suited for "mama rose" unless she gets rid of all of her mannerisms and vocal distinctions she will just be barbra saying & singing mama's lines..remember "the mirror has two face".she was supposed to be overweight in that film and all she did was ad layers of clothes to her frame, guess what? the big transformation scene did not work...the movie didn't work...which unfortunately makes me believe she just will not be willing to go all out for "gypsy" and shed barbra completely...please please please prove me wrong i welcome it

Oh just do it. In movies, age is just a number. In European movies of the fifties, age is used ironically. Like a younger woman plays an older woman or vice versa. Using physical appearance ironically, Bette Davis played the lead in Mr Skeffington (1944) as a great beauty and she was not a stunningly beautiful woman. For some reason age is a bigger issue in how the public reacts to female actors as opposed to male actors. Also, anyone remember that one of the controversies in Hello Dolly was that in 1969, Ms. Streisand wasn't old enough to play Dolly Levi? Now it's the reverse criticism. And also I remember when Prince of Tides came out, some critics complained that Barbra Streisand didn't use a gay actor to portray the gay character in that movie. She used George Carlin instead. Maybe movie audiences are too literal. Too much CGI is warping everybody's brains. Also in regards to the perfect diction criticism, in a musical it seems that would be appropriate. Also, since it's a Broadway musical, the singer/actor would have to approach the music more to the composer's wishes than the singer's own interpretation. The audience would want perfect diction so they can hear everything the librettist intends.

"i'm the guy who said you would be playing a grandmother...and no amount of writing is gonna change the fact that you turn 70 next month and will be playing a women in her mid 30s when we're first introduced...i love you barbra but this is not the way you want this amazing career you have had to end...do "sunset blvd" your a perfect fit"

No way- you go do Sunset Blvd- that movie sucks eggs. Only one good part and that was the end!
Barbra knows what she is doing- that is why she has been on top, a legend, and a relevant person in the entertainment industry for 50 years! Stop thinking about the same old rehashed, overcooked, rebaked versions of Gypsy you have seen forever- this is going to be something new and different just like Yentl. All these same people (naysayers) will be the very same one singing her praises out of the OTHER side of their mouths after they see it- It never fails.... Yawn..they get boring with their advice to Barbra, and to us who can think out of the box.

The movie is already being planned and worked on. Why wish bad on a the baby while it's in utero? Why wish for a different baby? Why not wish blessings on it instead?

Barbra, please, don't care about what people say, you've been going through that your whole life!
Do your thing Beautiful, do your thing.

What a hit movie Barbra?Put Lady Gaga as gypsy and you as her mom.Fans will flock to see you both.It will be a big hit plus giving Lady Gaga a chance to show her acting ability.I see Oscars in the making.

I hope it's updated for more of a modern feel, I don't see the humor of when this was originally written working at all. If not, it will be humiliating to see. I only want the best, I'm sure my 'fears' will not manifest.

Hi Barbra,

You'll be excellent in this role. I can picture it; the cinematography; the colour tones; and you. This role seems tailor made for you.

I hope you know the impact your spirit has had on so many,

The Best,
Dave (from Ireland).

Gosh Barbra,
that's a beautiful picture of you! Smiling
You look so happy!

Just reading this makes my heart skip a beat. To hear more news regarding Barbra Streisand playing "Rose" in "Gypsy," is getting closer to reality, is the best news to hit the entertainment world in decades. Barbra, would be doing another Jule Styne Musical -"Gypsy;" of the same caliber as "Funny Girl" is astonishing.. If anyone can pull it off it is Barbra. Seeing this news at the Barbra Streisand website makes it seem more official.

It will be a gift to us all if Barbra gives the world a film version that is worthy of the Broadway original production staring "Ethel Mermman;" Talk about a gift from the show biz G-ds.

Gypsy, is one of my all time favorite Musicals. So much so, that one of my Rhodesian ridgeback's is named, "Gypsy."

Once the cameras start rolling, we will know that a first class movie is on it's way with another performance of a lifetime. Finally, we can say: "Everything's Coming Up Roses."

I am so elated, just to hear this news, gives me hope for the future of the film Musical in Hollywood. Talk about advancing an art form.

Go Barbra Streisand!!!!

Kind regards,
Jeffrey Freedman

PETER

AND BOO TO THAT GUY WHO WAS NASTY IN SAYING YOU SHOULD BE PLAYING A GRAND MOTHER !!!!

This is a historical moment, I think.
What a privilege to be a fan of Barbra Streisand, what a pleasure! Smiling
She exceeds all expectations as usual Laughing out loud

Barbra,
Wouldn't be a nice twist if in Gypsy you play two roles (like Eddie Murphy does sometimes) the role of the mother who is uninterested in show business and the Grand Mother who is actually Mama Rose. Of course they would have to age you for that.
Steph Carse

I am so excited for Barbra. I get to see her at her best.

This is such Great News! I cant wait to see Barbra as Mama Rose, "Everything's Coming up Roses" !

Hallelujah! There is absolutely no one who could play that part as well as Barbra! What a great classic film and the most talented actress and singer in the world to bring Gypsy to life! It will be the premier event of the year when it comes out. And Barbra, I send you best wishes for your birthday...you are one of a kind and we love you! Thank you for blessing our lives!

This is the best news that I have heard in a long time....Barbra just keeps getting better with age....I am beside myself with excitement..can't wait for both of her films to come out...patiently waiting :0)

THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS! There is so much which can be done with this iconic character of "Momma Rose," so many layers to really get into the psyche of this queen of all stage mothers which previous versions have not.

Not to say that the previous versions were sub-par. Far from it. But with such a wealth of riches that this play has had over the years and with its amazing songs, I think the story can grow and expand even further.

Starting with such a rich palette, who better to add some more finishing touches than Barbra Streisand.

Barbra, I am a big fan of yours. I am very excited at the idea of you doing "Gypsy" as I also loved the previous films by Rosiland Russell and Lucille Ball. Keep up the great work. Carol

Jule Stein must be doing happy cartwheels up in heaven knowing that both his babies ( the play and Barbra) are in such good hands, I suspect that maybe even Ethel is doing a jig or two up above...Exciting news for us uber fans, but now the agonizing wait begins!

love jadore barbra le reve qu elle donne un concert a marseille pas trop cher

It will be wonderful to see you in film again! And in such a great story with such great music! My best male friend, Lawrence, is your original fan. He introduced me to you years ago via the film, Funny Girl! After seeing that, it said to him, 'I'm in.' Don't keep us waiting too long for this new project! God bless!

Just like you said! I never doubted you one iota. Good luck and thanks for once again....vindicating me!

Luv you always,
