PAGING CRAIG (barbrastreisand.com)
Craig could you please answer a question for me concerning the recording of AVE MARIA in English by Barbra? Did she write these English lyrics? Thanking you in advance.

Nancy -- I don't recall Barbra singing Ave Maria in English.
There was the 'Gounod' version on A Christmas Album (1967) and then there was the 'Op. 52 No. 6' version on Christmas Memories (2001).
Both of these were in Latin (if I recall rightly).

Craig,
During the '67 sessions, Barbra recorded an English language version using roughly the same arrangement heard on A Christmas Album. As far as I know it wasn't released until just a few years ago on a compilation CD ( I could be wrong about that.) I was able to listen to this version recently via a post on youtube. Maybe I should work for barbrastreisand.com!
Craig?
Hello this is Vicki,
When did you take over Barbra's official website? I thought this site was being monitored by someone in San Francisco.
Jiminy Snap:
Maybe you're right. Barbra has 62 albums -- it's hard to keep up to date. LOL. I just don't recall hearing it in English.
Hi Vicki:
I started doing updates in April 2009.
Craig
It is on a 2005 STARBUCKS CD ....... BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE
Gounod's Ave Maria (English Version)
CRAIG - (or anyone reading this) I would like to have a copy of the lyrics please. I do not understand all that Barbra is singing, and I am almost certain she wrote this herself. Thank you in advance.
Ah yes -- I remember now. It was a bonus song that Starbuck's were offering. It wasn't released on one of her main album releases.
This is probably one of the only things I don't have a copy of - so can't give you the lyrics I'm afraid.
I'm sure someone can help you.

I've never been able to understand all the lyrics of Barbra's English Ave Maria. Actually, I'm totally unsure about 2 words. Why don't we post them here, so maybe we are able, with a "cut & past" , to reconstruct them all?
There are the lyrics I hear:
Ave Maria
Thou haily favoured
God is with thee,
Blessed blessed art Thou,
Thou above all women
blessed be Thy **?,
blessed be Thy Son , the son of God,
the Lord most high.
Blessed Maria,
Blessed Maria,
Maria,
Pray oh Pray for us,
for us **? sinners,
now and when the hour of our Death
our death all take us
Amen
Chris Mark...
I managed to hear the second word in the song that you didn't know -- but I still don't know what she's saying on line 6?? Hmmmm?
Ave Maria
Thou highly favoured
God is with thee,
Blessed blessed art Thou,
Thou above all women
blessed be Thy ???,
blessed be Thy Son , the son of God,
the Lord most high.
Blessed Maria,
Blessed Maria,
Maria,
Pray oh Pray for us,
for us wretched sinners,
now and when the hour of our Death
our death all take us
Amen

NancyH,
Nice lyrics but I don't think a nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn could write this shiksa song.
I'm pretty sure that missing word is "offspring," which makes sense.
Wow, I think so! Now the lyrics are complete!

Ave Maria
Thou Haily Favoured
God is with Thee,
Blessed blessed art Thou,
Thou above all women
Blessed be Thy Offspring,
Blessed be Thy Son , the son of God,
the Lord most high.
Blessed Maria,
Blessed Maria,
Maria,
Pray oh Pray for us,
For us wretched sinners,
Now and when the hour of our Death
Our death all take us
Amen

I sort of hear a word beginning with a wahhhhhhh sound, but then heard "off spring" as well and then could not get it out of my head. If it is "off spring" ? I am disappointed. I did not want to post that, I was hoping someone would come up with better lyrics. But, thank you everyone......I can now put these lyrics to rest. I love the song, I think it is just beautiful. Actually I love all 3 of her versions or "Ave Maria." But then, as I have said, she could sing the phone book and I would be in awe.
I think that now the real question that someone should answer to us is...
where are coming from these lyrics?
Maybe it's correct the idea that Barbra wrote them by herself, because they're rather different from the original prayer, even if they mantain the structure and the meaning.
I believe I read somewhere that she wrote the lyrics, but I can not recall where? You know how all this facts stick in your mind. You remember then, but not where you originally picked them up, smiles.

Aren't the English lyrics simply a translation of the original Latin ones?
Hi guys
I have a copy of the album so I thought I'd check to see if the lyricist is credited.
This is how it's credited:
Barbra Streisand; arranged by R. Ellis
Gounod's Ave Maria (English Version)
(C.F. Gounod)
I would be quite surpised if Barbra did the lyric translation. I wonder who the royalties go to?!
Here's a little bit from the liner notes:
"Gounod's Ave Maria" was recorded in both Latin and English for 1967's A Christmas Album. Streisand opted to include the Latin take on the LP, shelving the English version for 38 years. It makes its debut on this CD.
By the way, NancyH, I love your avatar. I have the same one on large canvas on the wall in my basement.
TO SPACE CAPTAIN
My Avatar is a framed 100% silk scarf that was sold at her 94 concerts. I purchased it through QVC ($75) in 94 when they did a show of things that were sold at that concert. I LOVE IT, and I felt it needed to be displayed. About a dozen years later my husband had it framed for me, it hangs on the wall above our bed headboard. It is huge! the framing cost about 6 times more then the scarf, and that was done on a 60% off sale,oy! Everyone who visits our home is in awe when they see it. Thank you for the compliment.
BABS DUDE - No it is not the Latin translation.
Nancy
Hey Nancy
Mine is the big silk scarf too. It's stretched over canvas and it hangs on the wall down in our basement. How lucky we are to have supportive spouses -- my wife got it done for me. I think I paid $100 for the scarf online.
About the song - wouldn't ASCAP or someone have to pay royalites to the person responsible for the lyrics everytime the song is played (officially)?
I'm sorry I don't have an answer to that space captain.
I have been going nuts, looking" all over "for where I originally read that she wrote those lyrics?
Thanks for replying, I think it is great that we can do this on this newly vamped website. It would be even better if we had a chat room here!!! HINT HINT
