Last night, voters signed a referendum against Donald Trump and his regressive and divisive policies. His unpopularity and the resistance from activists helped fuel Democratic victories across the nation. The victories had both breathe and depth from school boards and city councils to Governor’s mansions.

The most watched election was in Virginia where Democrat Ralph Northam far exceeded late polling to win a resounding victory for Governor. Democrats swept the other statewide offices in the state including … Read more »

It’s a natural quality for women to nurture, and we should hold on to that generosity of spirit.

At the Women in Film luncheon in 1992, I spoke about the skewed perception of women in relation to men. I shared my thoughts on how language gave us an insight into the way women were viewed in a male-dominated society:

A man is commanding—a woman is demanding.

A man is forceful—a woman

What happened to make Donald Trump so reflexively cruel?

Henry Kissinger once pondered a question about President Richard Nixon, “Can you imagine what this man would have been like if somebody had loved him?” This brings up the debate about the role of nature and nurture in the development of one’s personality and makes one wonder about Donald Trump. Why is he so insecure that he has to lie at every occasion about

It’s kindness and empathy that will make America greater, Mr. Trump.

I’ve said this before, but I’m saying this again. Trump is a walking, talking illustration of what psychologists call “the disowned self,” a person who refuses to recognize his own flaws and instead projects them onto others. He accused Hillary Clinton of being a liar and said she was “Putin’s puppet,” when that glove seems to fit him. Before he was president, … Read more »

Hello Los Angeles! What a beautiful day…what a great country we already live in!

I’m going to start by quoting H. L. Mencken, the journalist, satirist and social critic, who said in 1920: “On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

It matters that the crowd for the Women’s March on Washington was far bigger than that for President Trump’s inauguration. The new president often boasts of having started a great movement. Let it be the one that was born with Saturday’s massive protests.

If size is important, and apparently to Trump it is, there was no contest. The Metro transit system recorded 1,001,613 trips on the day of the protest, the second-heaviest ridership Read more »

When Donald J. Trump swore the presidential oath on Friday, he assumed responsibility not only for the levers of government but also for one of the United States’ most valuable assets, battered though it may be: its credibility.

The country’s sentimental reverence for truth and its jealously guarded press freedoms, while never perfect, have been as important to its global standing as the strength of its military and the reliability of its currency.

In a stunning rebuke to a president inaugurated 24 hours earlier, hundreds of thousands of women (and some men) in Washington and as many as 3 million in other cities (Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, etc.) gathered to protest President Trump. Donald Trump’s inauguration heralds a new age of arrogance and says something sad and scary.

WASHINGTON — The word popped up in the opening sentence of Barack Obama’s first Inaugural Address and in the opening paragraphs of George W. Bush’s.

President Trump presented such a graceless and disturbingly ahistoric vision of America on Friday that his Inaugural Address cast more doubt than hope on his presidency.
