Re: What Matters Most... To The Fans

" Barbra breathes in air, breathes out light. Barbra is my delight. "

As soon as I heard her live rendition of Windmills, I thought Barbra had broken her own glass ceiling, again! Then came the couple of free downloads, and finally the whole album on Aug. 19th. Would that woman stop topping herself, evah?

Since I had been a fan for over 34 years, I probably have exhausted all the praising adjectives one could muster to describe the Art of Barbra. There were movies or albums I had put into perspective with time, I must admit. Therefore, while adoring this new album, I kept telling myself to "hold my horses", and try not to plotz. In a twisted way, I was expecting my enthusiasm to curb over time.

It didn't. It's been 20 delicious days now, and I still stand by my initial reaction: What Matters Most is one of the five absolute best albums of Barbra. It has it all, the musicality, the arrangements, the sequencing, the raw emotion, the intricate layers of suggestion, the sexyness, and above all, the return of clarity within this miraculous voice. Long story short, like a Fabergé marble egg, it's 'whole'.

As for the cover art, well... Here's the only reason why it doesn't top neither The Way We Were, Je M'Appelle (of course, I'm French) nor The Broadway Album in my personal pantheon of BJS albums. The Yentl soundtrack being way up there, unattainable, if you care to wonder.

Because I can never get enough of That Voice, I'm a bit obsessed with the idea that Barbra should record, and record, and then some, for the sake of posterity. This new release brightens my days and illuminates the hope for future releases.
