Barbra speaks on the passing of her friend, Marvin Hamlisch
"I’m devastated. He was my dear friend. He’s been in my life ever since the first day I met him in 1963, when he was my rehearsal pianist for “Funny Girl.” He played at my wedding in 1998… and recently for me at a benefit for women’s heart disease. The world will remember Marvin for his brilliant musical accomplishments, from “A Chorus Line” to “The Way We Were,” and so many others, but when I think of him now, it was his brilliantly quick mind, his generosity, and delicious sense of humor that made him a delight to be around. Just last night, I was trying to reach him, to tell him how much I loved him, and that I wanted to use an old song of his, that I had just heard for the first time. He was a true musical genius, but above all that, he was a beautiful human being. I will truly miss him.”

Re: Barbra speaks on the passing of her friend, Marvin Hamlisch
My spouse & I were the 1st male same-sex couple to be married in a Jewish ceremony in a synogogue in Canada last Jan./12. We chose to have the music of Streisand accompanied by Mr. Hamlisch because we found the melodys to be mesmerizing & etherical. We could not think of any other music that was as suitable to the occasion as songs by a True champion of gay people. We & our guests were delighted with our choice. Mr. Hamlisch will be missed for the wonderful talent he possessed-& for his perfection!

Dear Barbra & Staff:
I would like to add my condolences to you and your staff as you grieve the loss of your good friend. I was so shocked when I heard the news that Marvin had passed away. He indeed has been a part of your "team" since 1963...and I also want to send my condolences to the Bergmans'; you all have worked together for so many years, writing, recording and performing Marvin's music...that has changed the world in appreciating good broadway to pop music!
Just in the mid 70's as I was discovering your career and Marvin's, along came "A Chorus Line". Our highschool music department was known for its classical music arrangements and then a new teacher was hired that loved broadway music and jazz. I played many musical arrangements from "Chorus Line" during my band years and grew to love that score, everytime that I would hear it. In 1978, I was in London, and saw the musical at the Dury Lane Theatre...I loved that musical and the choreography was superb!
For a classically trained musician and singer like me; Marvin's music really challenged you to perform your best, when you were performing it. The way that "he could sculpt a melody" or provide a modulation from a minor to major key, was so brilliant and really draw you in as a musician. I will miss hearing his new creations and will enjoy others intrepreting his classic ones.
All my very best, hope to see you in Toronto at the end of October,
Ian

I would recommend watching a 'Conversation with Marvin Hamlisch' on the KCTS9 (PBS in Seattle) website. Wonderful person. Looking forward to seeing Barbra in Vancouver on October 29.
