Jonathan Hiskes at Grist has written up a Copenhagen 101 primer for anyone who's just tuning in to the latest round of world climate talks, so I don't have to. Which is great, because there were three main points I wanted to go over.

First, the imperative: the planet is likely on track to lose life support ability for 5 billion people below current levels and our window to prevent this outcome is closing rapidly.Read more »

President Obama and Congress will soon make defining choices about health care and troops for Afghanistan.

These two choices have something in common — each has a bill of around $100 billion per year. So one question is whether we’re better off spending that money blowing up things in Helmand Province or building up things in America.Read more »

So it seems that we aren’t going to have a second Great Depression after all. What saved us? The answer, basically, is Big Government.

Just to be clear: the economic situation remains terrible, indeed worse than almost anyone thought possible not long ago. The nation has lost 6.7 million jobs since the recession began. Once you take into account the need to find employment for a growing working-age population, we’re probably around nine million jobs short of where we should be.Read more »

“AUGUST is a challenging time to be president,” said Andrew Card, the former Bush White House chief of staff, as he offered unsolicited advice to his successors in a television interview last week. “I think you have to expect the unexpected.”

He should know. Thursday was the eighth anniversary of “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.,” the President’s Daily Brief that his boss ignored while on vacation in Crawford. Aug. 29 marks the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s strike on the Louisiana coast, which his boss also ignored while on vacation in Crawford.Read more »

Last weekend, I was in Washington DC to accept the Kennedy Center Honors, and I noticed that the kiss between me and the "soon to be former" President Bush created quite a stir. The Today Show even proclaimed that it was a sign of the apocalypse. The timing is ironic. After eight years of President Clinton and on the cusp of at least four years of President Obama, I get selected to receive this prestigious awardaduring the Bush Administration. I have never met George W.Read more »

Americans can't take anything for granted on Tues November 4th. In the 2000 and 2004 elections, voter fraud, voter suppression and voter intimidation were rampant, especially in the critical swing states Florida and Ohio. This year, we are likely to break voter turnout records. Hundreds of thousands of voters have lined up to vote early around the country, and we have already heard numerous accounts of electronic voting machine glitches, registration and ballot issues and long lines.Read more »

Until the Republican Convention, very few had ever heard of Sarah Palinaand now this mean-spirited campaigner is asking who is Barack Obama???

I'm asking who is Sarah Palin???

The Republicans fight dirtyathey take every opportunity to shift the political conversation from substance to frivolity. They don't want the public to see the huge differences between the two parties. Less than two weeks ago, John McCain mocked Senator Obama's appearance at a Hollywood fundraiser.

And where do you think John McCain was supposed to be tonight? On Monday it was announced that he himself was coming to Hollywood for a fundraiser charging up to $40,800 a plate. The hypocrisy... Read more »

The media has labeled John McCain a "moderate maverick" and a reformer. That moniker could not be more misrepresentative of the core values of the current Republican candidate running for President.
